With the increasing popularity of the modern farmhouse design (thanks Joanna!!!), we are getting more and more request for installing farmhouse-style, or as they are also know, apron sinks. When designing your kitchen, these stylish sinks offer you some better options than traditional sinks if you want to really set your kitchen apart.
There are 3 ways to incorporate a farmhouse sink into your kitchen:
Option 1- Modify Your Existing Cabinets

Most kitchen sink base cabinets have a blank drawer between the cabinet doors and the countertops. Since most apron sinks have a ~10” tall face, when installing one into an existing cabinet, the blank drawer and face frame needs to be cut out. In most cases, the doors on the base cabinet are also too tall to allow an apron sink to fit. We will usually cut out the top of the sink base cabinet and also install matching cabinet doors that are a few inches shorter. With the new opening and shorter cabinet doors, a full-sized apron sink can fit after also cutting out the piece of the countertop in front of your existing sink.
Option 2- Install A Retrofit Apron Sink
Apron sink manufacturers now offer a retrofit sink designed to fit in the space above your existing cabinet doors. These sinks have a shorter face for this reason, but behind the cabinet doors, they are full-depth like any other kitchen sink. This is the best option for installing a farmhouse sink when on a tight budget.
Option 3- New Cabinetry
Most of our kitchen remodels are complete tear-out and installation of new cabinets, counters, etc. When installing new cabinets, you have total control to design your cabinet layout to accommodate any appliances and of course a farmhouse sink. Most manufacturers of ready to assemble (RTA) cabinets, like the shaker cabinets you see on pinterest or HGTV, offer sink base cabinets that are designed to fit farmhouse sinks. You can work with your designer or contractor to select the right cabinet to fit any apron sink.
